From the Sky to the Sea : A Unique Vancouver Experience

Updated: 2 days ago

Burrard Inlet offers boaters a stunning mix of natural beauty and urban excitement. From the serene waters near Stanley Park to the bustling airport activity around Coal Harbour, there's always something new to discover.

One of the most unique aspects of boating in Burrard Inlet is the chance to witness the comings and goings of Harbour Air floatplanes in Coal Harbour.

Did you know that Coal Harbour serves as an active airstrip for Harbour Air? It's true!

This bustling hub is one of two major floatplane facilities in the Vancouver area, with the other located at YVR. As you navigate the waters of Coal Harbour, you'll have the rare opportunity to watch these planes take off and land.

Just remember to keep a safe distance and be mindful of the increased activity in the area.

Vancouver has a rich history of air travel, and Coal Harbour plays a significant role in that story. The history of Coal Harbour as a floatplane base dates back to the early 20th century, when it became a vital link connecting Vancouver to remote coastal communities.

The sheltered waters and central location made it an ideal spot for seaplanes to operate, facilitating transportation and communication across the region.

Over the years, Coal Harbour has evolved into a modern aviation hub, but its historical significance remains. The operation of floatplanes is limited to daylight hours due to the visual requirements for landing and takeoff, adding a unique rhythm to the area.

The de Havilland Canada DHC-2 ‘Beaver’ is the most common type of aircraft you’ll see on the water - they’re 1950s propeller planes known for their ability to take off and land in very short distances, so a lot of them have been made into float planes. They buzz in and out the Strait of Georgia daily.  They’re small but mighty, typically carrying up to six passengers.

Watching these planes gracefully lift off or touch down on the water is a truly special experience, blending the worlds of aviation and maritime tourism in a way that's distinctly Vancouver.

Next time you're out on the water, keep an eye to the skies.
