Burrard Inlet is a vital part of Vancouver’s history, serving as a hub for fishing, transportation, and recreation. Today, it continues to be a place of ecological significance, home to diverse marine species and a focal point for conservation efforts.
Under the sea, in Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet, a vibrant and dynamic ecosystem thrives just beneath the surface. As June brings warmer weather and longer days, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the importance of protecting these waters and the life they support - and the perfect time of year to see all our local wildlife.
Vancouver’s commitment to environmental protection has a rich history rooted in conservation laws. Over the past few decades, local authorities have implemented regulations to safeguard water quality and marine habitats. At Burrard Inlet Tours, we do our best to protect our lovely animal friends, while still getting to see them from a safe distance. Vancouver has many laws in place regarding interacting with wildlife. These include restrictions on pollution, measures to prevent overfishing, and initiatives to restore natural habitats. Such laws are essential for maintaining the health of Burrard Inlet, ensuring that future generations can enjoy its beauty.

The local Vancouver Aquarium plays a crucial role in these conservation efforts. Located along the waterfront, the aquarium is more than just a place for visitors to learn about marine life—it is an active participant in local conservation initiatives. They conduct research on BC’s waters, rescue and rehabilitate injured marine animals, and educate the public about sustainable practices. Their work highlights the importance of protecting our waters from pollution, climate change, and human impact.
Protecting the environment and wildlife of BC’s waters is vital for maintaining the ecological balance of the region. Healthy waters support a wide variety of species, from tiny plankton to majestic orcas. We’ve actually had whale spotting on our tours! The local orcas can be spotted playing in areas further away from larger tour ships or cruise vessels- the killer whales here enjoy their privacy.
By reducing pollution, advocating for marine protected areas, and supporting conservation programs, we can help ensure that these waters remain vibrant and sustainable for generations to come.
One of the most iconic residents of Burrard Inlet are our adorable harbour seals. These playful and curious creatures are a common sight along Vancouver’s shores, especially during the summer months. Harbour seals are vital indicators of the health of our marine environment, as their populations reflect changes in water quality and prey availability. Watching these seals bask on rocks or swim through the inlet reminds us of the importance of maintaining clean, healthy waters for all marine life - and makes for some great photo ops as well.
As we enjoy Vancouver’s beautiful waters this June, it’s essential to remember our role in protecting this precious environment. Whether through supporting conservation laws, visiting the Vancouver Aquarium, booking smaller-boat tours, or simply being mindful of our impact, each of us can contribute to preserving the rich biodiversity of BC’s waters. The underwater world of Burrard Inlet is a treasure worth safeguarding—so the kids of Vancouver today can continue to marvel at its wonders for years to come.
